News : E-P1 is out - (P)reviews around the web

Well, the E-P1 is officially out, and some lucky reviewers have gotten their paws on the camera for evaluation.

...for years now we've been imploring every manufacturer who would listen to us to build a non-reflex interchangeable lens camera around a large sensor, and the E-P1's styling (and all metal construction) harks back to the glory days of the mechanical camera in the 60's and 70's, when men were men and cameras were built like swiss watches

In summary this camera will not replace a top end SLR, its goal is to be a step up camera for point and shoot users, as well as a camera that serious photographers carry with them. It is designed to be priced affordably, as well as carry the top quality images that the most critical desire. With these requirements above no other camera can from my experience compete.

The advantage of the Micro Four Thirds system is that it makes it possible to change the traditional DSLR camera design drastically. A number of key elements have remained the same, but Olympus has seized the opportunity to design a compact housing with both hands. The retro design seems an almost impossible to justify choice. Personally, I am in favor of it and I find this design a truly wonderful addition to the current camera market.

Fifty years ago, Olympus came up with the Pen-series of half-frame film cameras. These cameras were well known for their design, compact size, and photo quality, and ended up selling over 17 million units. The most significant of these models was the PenF, released in 1963. The PenF was the world's first and only interchangeable lens half-frame camera, with twenty F. Zuiko lenses to choose from. In case you're wondering why they were called "Pen", Olympus says it was because "it was small enough to carry with you at all times, with the ability to easily record the events of daily life". Sounds good to me.

Will it blend?

News : Olympus Micro Four Thirds photo leak

Well, it seems like 43rumours have gotten a leaked photos of the Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera.
The original photos are from Chinese camera forums.
The camera is definitely compact, with a nod to Pen F and Contax G2 designs.
Should I replace my bulky E-3 for this little thing? I'm really tempted.l My personal style of photography has changed, my E-3 is left more and more behind.

News : Olympus E-450

Olympus announced today the E-450, an updated version of the tiny E-4XX line. The difference between the E-450 and E-420 are minute:

  • Three Art Filters (Pop Art, Soft Focus and Pin Hole)
  • Improved screen (The luminance has been improved)
  • Increased continuous shooting buffer (8 RAW files, rather than E-420's 6)
  • TruePic III+ processor

No IS, though. Olympus is clearly keeping the E-4xx line "As simple as possible, but not simpler".

Links : Panasonic G1 tested with various lenses

dc.watch.impress.jp has great photos from the G1 using various lenses.
The 9-18mm f4-5.6, 25mm f2.8, 25mm f1.4 and the 50mm f2.0 macro are all put on a G1 using the micro Four Thirds adapter.
The camera delivers beautiful images with these lenses. It looks like Panasonic did a great job of squeezing 12MP into the tiny sensor.

News : Olympus E-30 Offically launched

According to cnet.com, Olympus have officially launched the E-30, a 12MP 'tweener' camera, that sits between E-3 and E-5xx. The camera is very close to E-3 in specifications, having 5fps continuous shooting, 12MP sensor, the same 11 point AF module and 2.7 inches articulated screen.
It still hasn't shown up on fourthirds.org, though.

Olympus has also updated the 14-54 lens. It now has closer focus, circular aperture blades and improved contrast detection AF according to the CNET article.

Update:
It seems that the article has been removed. Maybe CNET was a bit premature?

News : Olympus Micro Four Thirds mockup...

In a what seemed a last minute presentation, Olympus showed reporters a mockup of compact micro Four Thirds camera. The camera mockup seems to be even smaller than the Sigma DP-1, and it had a retro feel to it, somewhat reminding me of Olympus 35RD or Pen FT designs.

News : Olympus E-XX

Olympus have quietly shown a "tweener" camera that seems to be positioned between the E-520 and E-3. The camera is smaller than the E-3, but has similar design. It has the articulating screen, similar button layout to the E-3 but a large dial on the left shoulder.
Quesabesde.com has some photos. Its seems to be somewhere between the E-3 and the E-520.
dpnow.com has some good photos of the camera.
